TC native dropped from 'Talent' show

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City native Joel Dear’s bid to win the NBC talent competition “America’s Got Talent” ended when his act failed to advance to the show’s semi-finals.

Aerial Ice, a six-member group that includes Dear and combines figure skating, dance and aerial acrobatics, performed Tuesday in a show televised live from Radio City Music Hall in New York. The performance earned mixed reviews from judges Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel and failed to garner enough television audience votes, resulting in the group’s elimination on Wednesday’s results show.

Dear is a Traverse City West Senior High graduate and a former member of the Traverse City Figure Skating Club. He competed for several years, including at the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, before turning pro and performing with ice shows like Holiday on Ice.

Currently he is working on a show in Sun Valley, Idaho.
