Fundraiser planned for teen injured in July crash

TRAVERSE CITY — The public is invited to play mini-golf on Sunday to raise money for a Central High School senior who was seriously injured in a July car accident.

The “Hope for Hathaway” event will be held at Pebblebrook Golf, 2072 U.S. 31 North, from noon to 5 p.m. All proceeds will go to Ian Hathaway’s family.

Hathaway is hospitalized at the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids. He responds to brain stimuli and vocal comments, such as blinking to mean “yes” and wiggling his toes. He can breathe without assistance and say a couple of words, including “mom” and “hi,” said Channing Bornschein, a close friend who is spearheading the fundraiser.

Hathaway was injured after pulling out in front of a tractor-semi trailer that was headed north on Garfield. Hathaway was driving east on Potter Road in a Jeep Grand Cherokee on July 25 at about 4 p.m. The semi hit the passenger side of the Jeep, injuring his friend Tyler Morse, 17.

“They were behind a pick-up truck and the stop sign,” Bornschein said. “Visibility was bad at that intersection, which has a one-way flashing yellow light. When the truck went, Ian thought it was safe for him to go too, and he didn’t double-check the road, pulled out, and got hit on the passenger side.”

Morse broke his ankle, bruised his internal organs and injured his left hip. Hathaway suffered severe brain trauma after striking his head on the Jeep roof, Bornschein said.

Physicians expect Hathaway to remain at Mary Free Bed for the next 2½ months; his pathway to recovery is unpredictable, particularly since he is a teen, Channing said.

Both Hathaway and Morse played for the Traverse City Central High School football team, who will meet up with its cross-town rival today.

“Tyler will be with the team on the field, but he’s benched because his foot is still in a walking boot,” Channing said.

For those who can’t attend, donations can be sent to the Pebblebrook address, with checks made out to Pebblebrook Golf, with “Ian Hathaway” in the memo line. Bracelets that say “Hope for Hathaway” are also available at Pebblebrook. For more information, please email
