Recovery walk, rally to raise support and awareness

TRAVERSE CITY — A recovery walk and rally in downtown Traverse City will be held Sept. 15 in support of people who are recovering from substance abuse problems.

“The stigma of substance abuse and mental health disorders is so overwhelming, but these people are often neighbors and coworkers who need our help. They do get well with treatment and all the other various pathways to recovery,” said Greg Stone, director of Stoneshouse, a nonprofit and rally sponsor. “It isn’t just the person living under the bridge. It’s all over and we want the community to be aware of that.”

Nationally, more than 23 million people identify themselves as in recovery, and many times that number have recovered and are a positive force in their family and community, Stone said.

The event starts at Clinch Park at 1:30 p.m. with a brief ceremony and speeches. Participants will then walk in the downtown area carrying signs. The rally will circle back to Clinch Park, where The River, an Open Space concession and recreation outfitter, will provide free food for participants.

Stone said September is National Recovery Month and this is just one of hundreds of events across the country. The weekend will also include the Michigan Substance Abuse Conference at the Grand Traverse Resort, Stone said.
