Rocks lead to sewer overflow in Garfield

TRAVERSE CITY — Big stones and small boulders dropped through a sewer manhole led to a spill of about 1,000 gallons of raw sewage in a Garfield Township subdivision.

The Grand Traverse County Department of Public Works responded to the spill in an undeveloped area of the Arbors subdivision near Hartman and Dracka roads Friday at about 10:30 a.m. Mike Slater, county DPW director, said he believes someone dropped the rubble into the sewer through the manhole because the cover was on upside down.

The sewage soaked into the ground and DPW applied powdered lime to the soil to decontaminate the area, Slater said.
