Fire near Mancelona under control

— MANCELONA - A quick response by firefighters is credited with deterring a potentially dangerous fire situation in Antrim County.

Eight to 10 acres of grass and trees caught fire Sunday sometime after 1 p.m. near Nothstine Road. The fast-moving fire was considered a severe threat given dry conditions and a strong wind, but a quick response by firefighters allowed them to contain the blaze, according to Don Klingler, a fire supervisor with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' Gaylord office.

Nearby residents were observed spraying lawns with garden hoses as a preventative measure, although there were no immediate reports of structures being threatened. Fire crews responding included the DNR and multiple Antrim County fire departments.
