Forum explains Citizens United ruling
TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College will host a community forum on “Creating Democracy and Challenging Corporate Rule” with guest speaker David Cobb of the Move to Amend campaign.
The two-hour event is part history lesson and part heart-felt call to action and will take place in the Milliken Auditorium on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
The recent U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC allowed for unlimited corporate spending on elections. Cobb, an attorney and national leadership member for the Move to Amend Coalition, will discuss the history behind the recent decision and how to mobilize against “corporate personhood” and the Citizens United court decision.
“Corporate personhood” commonly refers to court-created precedent that gives corporations constitutional rights intended solely for human beings.
More than 308,340 people signed an online petition supporting a constitutional amendment at www.MoveToAmend.org.
Milliken Auditorium is located at 1701 East Front Street on the NMC campus. For more information call Brian Alendruff at (707) 269-0984 or email email@example.com.
