---- — GRAND RAPIDS — An Elberta teenager has regained consciousness after nearly a week in a "coma-like" state after an apparent murder-suicide attempt.
In an email statement, Matt Stapleton said his daughter Isabelle, 14, was removed from a ventilator Friday at Devos Children's Hospital. Since then she awoke and was removed from the critical care unit. Stapleton's wife, Kelli, remains in jail in Benzie County after investigators accused her of trying to kill herself and her daughter.
The girl suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning after she was left inside a van in a remote area in Benzie County with two burning charcoal grills. Isabelle's mother, Kelli Stapleton, 45, has been charged with attempted murder.
"She has smiled and is now walking and talking," Stapleton wrote. "It is nothing short of a miracle. While she still has several obstacles to overcome, we are extremely hopeful with this unbelievable turn of events."
