Benzie's camelid connection

BEULAH — Those aren’t strange-looking deer or fluffy dogs trotting through Chris and David Nelson’s property.

They are alpacas.

The Benzie County couple raises the members of the camelid families at the Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm between Frankfort and Beulah. This is not just a novelty hobby; it’s part of a viable business model.

“Right now, the money is in breeding and selling … and producing excellent fiber,” said Chris Nelson.
