Authorities: Mother left 6-year-old home alone for hours

TRAVERSE CITY — A Garfield Township woman faces a child abuse charge after authorities said she left her 6-year-old home alone for several hours.

Grand Traverse County sheriff’s Capt. Randy Fewless said two teenage girls found a distraught child in a common area of the Arbors of Traverse City apartment complex off Hartman Road on Aug. 30. He said the teens waited about two hours for the mother to return before they called authorities at 5:55 p.m.

“They ended up taking care of her for a while,” Fewless said.

The mother returned by the time deputies arrived and showed signs of intoxication. Fewless said she arrived home from work that day, became upset with her child and decided she needed “time away from her daughter.”

When that “time away” turned into a few hours the child became increasingly frantic and found her way outside. Fewless said the mother spent the time drinking before she drove back to the apartment complex. A portable Breathalyzer test found her blood alcohol content was .08 percent.

The mother was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and a felony second-degree child abuse. Children’s Protective Services was contacted and turned the child over to a relative.
