AAUW brings creative event to TC

TRAVERSE CITY — The She Project, a national women’s creative event, will make its Traverse City debut Sept. 6.

The event centers around art, but goes far deeper than that, said organizers.

The project is sponsored by the Traverse City chapter of the American Association of University Women.

“It is about women expressing themselves and opening a discussion. It is open to every woman who is interested in learning to know herself and other women better,” said Laurie Gabel, local AAUW president.

On Sept. 6, participants will be emailed a list of “prompt” phrases created by local AAUW members. They will be asked to choose one and create, within two hours, an 8-by-10-inch art work that corresponds to that prompt, Gabel said.

Women can create their piece individually, with friends, or in an AAUW-organized group. The projects can be any form — ranging from words to collage to drawing — that fits on the paper. Art materials, photos, clippings, fabrics and other objects can be used.

Participants should have their art materials organized and ready before they start the the timer starts, Gabel said.

The completed works should be dropped off at the History Center of Traverse City by noon on Sept.10. The center is located in the Carnegie Library Building on Sixth Street.

The AAUW will host a reception at the History Center on Sept. 11 so participants can meet. The public also is invited to the exhibit, Gabel said. The pieces will be on display there throughout the month.

Scheduled work group times at the History Center are: Sept. 7, 1:30-3:30 p.m.; Sept. 8, 1-3 p.m.; and Sept. 9, 7–9 p.m.

Women 18 years and older are invited to participate by signing up online at aauwtc@gmail.com by Saturday. Participants also should note whether they want to work on their art projects individually or in a group, Gabel said.

The first She project was started in 2005 by Lauren Ohlgren in Corvallis, Ore. For more information on the project, go to: www.sheproject.com.
