If anyone looked up from the bustle on Front Street during the early evening of Aug. 2, they might have seen a tiny silhouette flying 50 to 100 feet high over the street, heading east toward the film festival, Friday Night Live and street sales crowds.
At first, it was a far-off black dot. Then, it slowly began to take a shape. It looked like someone from another time, or dimension, flying or maybe pedaling an odd contraption across the sky. As it drew closer, it took on a more futuristic appearance – a tiny UFO. When it came to the Cass Street corner, it hovered several seconds in front of the Mackinaw Brewing Co. Then it actually turned the corner and returned to Front Street.
Many people began to look up as hummed overhead above the bright red Traverse City Film Festival banner stretched across the street. They could see the four miniature helicopter blades and lights.
What is that, people asked. A drone, a spy, a toy?
None of those things. It was camera buff Shane Nelson’s newest remote-controlled photo gear – and adventure.
