Kalkaska 'Kampout' collects nearly 6 tons of food

KALKASKA — Unusually harsh spring weather didn’t deter a huge outpouring of support for Kalkaska Area Interfaith Resources.

Organizers reported this week that more than 11,000 pounds of non-perishable food were donated during a recent 24-hour food drive to help fill depleted food pantry shelves.

Dubbed Kampout for KAIR, the food drive set up a temporary campground at the Bill Marsh Auto dealership in Kalkaska. Boys Scouts from Troop 629 kept the campfire going around the clock, while Glen’s Market and Northland Foods stayed open throughout the event. Some late food donations are still being turned in, and organizers said the nearly six tons of food easily exceeded last year’s donations of 6,500 pounds.

“We saw a steady stream of donations throughout the event,” says KAIR codirector Kathy Bowman. “The need has greatly increased this year and the public has certainly responded to that need.”

Bowman said donations included nearly $4,000 in cash, which also exceeds previous cash donations.

KAIR, a nonprofit, helps the needy of Kalkaska County by providing emergency food assistance and protection against electric and utility shut off.
