Change clocks, dump refuse this weekend

TRAVERSE CITY — The start of daylight-saving time on Sunday means moving clocks forward an hour — and a chance to cheaply unload unwanted household refuse and recyclables.

The Michigan Green Consortium is holding its semiannual Clean Up and Green Up event tomorrow at American Waste Recycling Facility, 280 Hughes Drive in Traverse City.

The facility will accept items that are normally difficult to unload — old refrigerators, televisions, mattresses and batteries — for free between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Officials from more than 20 businesses and nonprofits will be at the facility to collect, recycle and reuse discarded materials.

”We know its expensive to dispose of some items so we appeal to our recycling members to come to this event,” said Ella Cooper-Froehlich, chairman of the consortium’s board of directors. “People can drop stuff off here instead of pushing it in to the woods or in to their backyards.”

The consortium has netted huge amounts of unwanted items during past collection events, including 100 air conditioners, 200 refrigerator and freezer units, and 10 cubic yards of florescent lights, Cooper-Froehlich said.

Some items require caps to prevent overflows. Each vehicle can drop off up to two television sets and up to five pounds of alkaline batteries. Total mattress and boxspring collections are capped at 50.

Local utilities Cherryland Electric Cooperative and Traverse City Light & Power will offer credits to customers who dispose of appliances that lack energy efficiency. The appliance must be able to power-on to qualify for a credit.

“They are sizable credits, like $30 for a refrigerator and freezer,” Cooper-Froehlich said.

Organizers anticipate 800 to 900 people will attend the event.

“Every year it just keeps growing and growing and growing,” American Waste General Manager Mark Bevelhymer said.
