Traverse City utility plans search for director

TRAVERSE CITY — The board of Traverse City Light & Power will conduct a national search to replace its fired executive director, Ed Rice, but the search won't start until early next year.

A board committee is working on creating a job description or "want ad" for the position, said board Chairman Pat McGuire. He hopes to have the job description ready for the full board's review at their first meeting in January.

"We're trying to determine what we think are going to be the most important qualifications for a new director," McGuire said.

The committee is also working on a recommendation for how to conduct the search.

Grand Traverse County turned down the committee's request to use its human resource department. Jen Seman, the county's human resource director, has previous experience in executive recruitment and ran the searches for the county's administrator and road commission manager. The county did give Seman permission to work for TCL&P on her own time.

McGuire said Seman is one option the committee will review, along with hiring an executive search firm or working through an industry association. He expects the committee to have a search recommendation ready no later than the first meeting in February.
