Accused Kalkaska shooter arraigned

Victim, 60, in critical condition at Munson Medical Center

KALKASKA — A woman shot by an acquaintance in Kalkaska County remains in the hospital, and her accused shooter faces felony charges.

Claudia Ann Roberts, 60, remained in critical condition at Munson Medical Center late Monday. Authorities believe Jack Sterling Lambath, 61, kicked in the door of her Rapid River Township home and shot her late Saturday.

Lambath was arraigned Monday on a charges of attempted murder and using a firearm during a felony.

Roberts, who was shot in the lower back with a high-powered rifle, sustained damage to several organs, Kalkaska Sheriff Dave Israel said.

"She's up and down," he said. "She's had several surgeries. It's not pretty."

Lambath is an alcoholic, Israel said. He knows Roberts because she took care of his wife, who recently died. The shooting motive isn't entirely clear, but it appears Roberts may have rejected Lambath's requests for a relationship.

Lambath was hospitalized after he tried to kill himself by ingesting medication, Israel said. He was brought back to Kalkaska County and arraigned on the charges Monday afternoon.

Kalkaska District Judge Lynne Buday set bond at $1 million.
