Woman seeks $25K from city

TRAVERSE CITY — A local woman filed a lawsuit that contends a Traverse City snowplow driver ran a yield sign and collided with her car.

Melissa Zagunis, of Traverse City, seeks at least $25,000 in damages from the city as a result of an accident that occurred Feb. 11, 2011, a civil complaint filed in 13th Circuit Court states.

Zagunis was driving east on Baldwin Street at about 10 a.m. when city snowplow driver David Bedford failed to yield while driving north on Santo Street.

Bedford's 1996 Ford dump truck "violently," crashed into Zagunis's 1998 Ford station wagon, the complaint says.

Mark Dancer, an attorney who represents Zagunis, said Traverse City police cited Bedford with a traffic ticket after the crash.

The accident left Zagunis with, among other injuries, a tear in her left shoulder cartilage and a pinched nerve. She underwent two surgeries to repair the cartilage and nerve.

The city has 28 days from Thursday to file an official answer to the complaint, Dancer said.

Lauren Trible-Laucht, the city's attorney, said she had not seen a copy of the complaint as of Friday.

She declined comment.
