Kalkaska fire destroys rentals

TRAVERSE CITY — Fire tore through an apartment building in the south end of the Village of Kalkaska.

Kalkaska County Sheriff David Israel said he didn’t think anyone was seriously injured or killed in the Thursday afternoon blaze, but the entire building had yet to be checked. Fire department officials were still sweeping through the building in the late afternoon.

One of the Sandy Pines Apartments low-income housing units was mostly destroyed, Israel said. People living in the building’s 16 rentals were evacuated, he said, and many were wheelchair-bound.

“I would say probably the majority of the building is going to be a total loss,” Israel said.
