TRAVERSE CITY — Area residents can celebrate Earth Day with the traditional give-away of free seedlings and compost at the Sara Hardy Farmer’s Market.
Traverse City Light & Power will celebrate its 25th year of distributing free Eastern White Pine seedlings on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The city-owned utility has given away over 140,000 seedlings to residents and community groups since 1988 to support the environment. Each seedling is potted and ready for planting.
Grand Traverse County and the City of Traverse City will dump large piles of free compost on Saturday in parking lots on Grandview Parkway with access from Union Street. The Cass Street entrance is closed. Residents need to bring own shovels and containers to the self-serve event.
Both give-aways begin Saturday at 8 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis until all seedlings and compost are gone.
