Army deserter arrested in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY — A man accused of deserting the United States Army in 2007 was arrested in Traverse City.

Officers from the Traverse City Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of Bay Street Friday evening at the request of the Army’s Military Desertion Unit.

A man, 25, presented incorrect photo identification, police said. Officers discovered he has been listed as a deserter from the Army since 2007.

The man in an interview revealed he changed his identity with a different name and date of birth when he left his assigned base.

Police were not aware of the man prior to notification from the Military Desertion Unit. He lived in Rapid City following his desertion from the Army, police said.

He is held in the Grand Traverse County Jail and will be turned over to the Army on military desertion charges. The suspect does not face local charges, police said.
