Traverse City teen killed after stealing cab

Traverse City — TRAVERSE CITY -- An 18-year-old Traverse City man died after he apparently crashed a stolen taxi cab early today.

Traverse City Police learned the victim’s identity late this morning and were working with his family to confirm identification. Authorities did not release the victim’s name.

Police said they were called to the 100 block of South Union Street at about 2:30 a.m. today after being informed that someone had stolen a taxi that was unattended but running.

Police then received a report of a crash in the 600 block of East Front Street near the Holiday Inn. Police said the driver and sole occupant of the stolen cab had been ejected from the vehicle and struck a light pole and fire hydrant. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police continue to investigate.
