— BELLAIRE — Filmmaker and part-time northern Michigan resident Michael Moore filed for divorce from his wife, Kathleen Glynn, in Antrim County court.
The 13th Circuit Court filing states their 21-year marriage has broken down and "there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved." A final divorce hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10 at 9:05 a.m.
Moore and Glynn did not return calls for comment.
The couple married Oct. 19, 1991, in Flint. Moore is famed for his documentaries such as "Bowling for Columbine" and "Fahrenheit 9/11," which Glynn produced, and is a hot-button figure nationally.
But locals know a different side of the provocative pair — they resided in a home on Torch Lake and Moore helped found the Traverse City Film Festival, an annual event that this year begins July 30.
Moore held an unofficial premiere of his 2007 film "Sicko" in the Bellaire Theater and the Michigan premiere of his 2009 film "Capitalism: A Love Story" at the same location. Glynn served for a time as vice chairwoman of the Antrim County Democratic Party.
Current Chairwoman Kathleen Peterson said she was not aware of the divorce filing and called it "sad news." She said Moore and Glynn provided support for a fledgling Democratic organization in a conservative northern Michigan community.
"He was very instrumental in offering us support and giving us an avenue for funding," she said.
Moore's attorneys Joseph Aviv and Jason Abel filed the divorce complaint on June 17. The complaint states Moore and Glynn no longer live together as husband and wife and have no children from the marriage.
Another June 17 filing states Glynn had 21 days to file a written answer or take action with the court before she's subject to a default judgment. Antrim County Circuit Court Clerk Sheryl Guy said her office hasn't received any documents from Glynn.
"We don't have a proof of service showing she's received those," Guy said. "If she has, we don't have that information back to the court file."
A representative at Moore's attorney's Bloomfield Hills law firm — Honigman, Miller, Schwartz and Cohn — said Aviv was out of the country. Abel did not return a call for comment. Glynn has no attorney of record listed in Antrim County Circuit Court.
Guy said it's unlikely Moore and Glynn may have separate or competing divorce filings elsewhere in the country — both are Antrim County residents.
"Her place of residence is Antrim County and technically it would be the county where she's a registered voter," she said. "He votes here, pays taxes here and homesteads here."
