Kelli Stapleton waives hearing

---- —

BEULAH — An Elberta woman accused of trying to kill her autistic daughter waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

Kelli Rai Stapleton, 45, was scheduled for the hearing this morning, but Stapleton waived the proceedings during a brief appearance in the courtroom of 85th District Court Judge John Mead.

A trial date was not set.

Stapleton is charged with attempted murder after authorities said she tried to kill herself and her daughter, Issy, 14, on Sept. 3 by igniting two charcoal grills in an enclosed van.

Stapleton's defense attorney, Brian Johnson, declined comment on the decision to waive the preliminary hearing.
