Forty-five layoffs confirmed in Antrim

CENTRAL LAKE — An Antrim County business laid off 45 people, but company leaders are optimistic at least some of the workers eventually will be re-hired.

Thirty-three employees and 12 temporary workers were let go Dec.13 at Armor Express in Central Lake. The company makes body armor for law enforcement and the military.

"The timing sucks, period," said Matt Davis, Armor Express' chief executive officer. "This is unfortunately just the way it shook out."

Davis said a federal contract recently expired and prompted the layoffs. He's optimistic more orders will lead to rehires of at least some of the workers.
