TRAVERSE CITY — All lanes at Cass and South Airport Roads are scheduled to be open today at 3 p.m. to ease heavy traffic congestion caused by a construction delay.
Grand Traverse Road Commission Manager Jim Cook expects the lanes to be open earlier, even by 1 p.m.
"That horrible inconvenience we expected to last three weeks with paving being done at night didn’t work out because of weather bad timing," Cook said. "We had no choice but to go ahead and let them pave as of yesterday, with the goal they’d be done at 6 a.m. this morning.”
Repaving on South Airport Road began June 2 and was scheduled to finish June 27. Rain delayed construction crews from Team Elmer’s, the contractor for the state and federally funded project.
Cook said representatives from the road commission, Michigan Department of Transportation and Team Elmer's met Tuesday to decide whether to finish the project this week.
“Our goal from day one was to make sure we didn’t have construction going on South Airport anywhere near the Fourth or the Cherry Festival,” Cook said.
