Infant dies in Benzie County, mother arrested

TRAVERSE CITY — An Illinois woman who gave birth at a Benzie County campsite faces charges in the infant's death.

Michigan State Police said Alyce Morales, 18, of Cicero, Ill., gave birth Monday at an unidentified campsite in Benzie County. Authorities said Morales hid the pregnancy from her parents and gave birth alone.

Morales and the baby, police said, later were observed at Munson Medical Center. The baby died a short time later.

An autopsy was ordered and police said in a press release "the infant had been murdered."

Morales is housed at Benzie County's jail on an open homicide charge. See Friday's Record-Eagle for more details.
