---- — MANCELONA — A Traverse City man died in a crash at a Mancelona intersection while returning home on his newly purchased motorcycle.
Authorities said Gene Allan Town, 72, was traveling south on U.S. 131 on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck driven east by Justin Ray Dodge, 22, of East Jordan. Town was pronounced dead at the scene by Antrim County’s medical examiner.
Antrim County Sheriff Dan Bean said Town wore a helmet. He said an autopsy should be completed this week in Grand Rapids, but results may take longer.
“We’re still investigating,” he said.
Beverly Town described her husband as a man of many interests — fishing, hunting and playing cards — and who owned motorcycles on and off through the years. He retired from Cone Drive Gearing Solutions in Traverse City.
Together they traveled to eastern Michigan on Wednesday to buy a Harley-Davidson. Beverly Town drove ahead toward Traverse City as her husband trailed on the new motorcycle. She didn’t see the truck that struck her husband.
“Evidently, a guy pulled out of a stop sign and ‘T-boned’ him,” she said.
Dodge told investigators he didn’t see the motorcycle after he stopped at the stop sign and pulled into the intersection. Bean said investigators are reviewing conditions at the crash scene.
“I don’t think there were any view obstructions there at that corner,” he said.
Michigan State Police, Mancelona Fire Department and Allied Ambulance all assisted.
