Volunteer 'navigators' needed to help at conference

TRAVERSE CITY — One of the best ways to help people move out of poverty is through one-on-one relationships.

That’s why the Poverty Reduction Initiative is putting out a call for relationship volunteers called “navigators.”

Navigators share their networks and experience with those struggling to improve their lives. A navigator would be expected to commit six months, a few hours each month, to provide guidance and encouragement, as well as advice on how to connect with resources.

Navigator training will take place on Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Northwest Michigan Works in Traverse City. To sign up for the mandatory training, please email Susan McQuaid at or call 947-3200, ext. 205.

Trained “navigators” will work with participants at a free Opportunity Conference 2013 at Bayview Wesleyan Church, Nov. 5 when Donna Beegle, a national authority on poverty, will speak. Participants will learn how to gain confidence, get through hard times, create goals and work a plan.

They will also build a support network and meet a personal” navigator” to help them.

To reserve a spot at the Opportunity Conference 2013 call Anna at 231-929-5067. For more information go to
