TRAVERSE CITY — City commissioners will meet with their executive search consultants to plot strategy and profile qualities they desire in a new city manager.
Michigan Municipal League representatives will meet with city commissioners during their study session today at 7 p.m. George Korthauer, Petoskey’s former city manager, will lead the search.
The discussion will focus on establishing candidate qualifications, advertising strategy, and the search’s overall timeline.
Mayor Michael Estes said he wants a new city manager under contract, if not on the job, by the time current City Manager Ben Bifoss steps down on June 28.
“There’s no reason it can’t be done by then,” Estes said. “We have all of March, April, May and June. If we can’t have it done by then, shame on us.”
Estes said the commission will find out tonight if Korthauer agrees.
Korthauer spent 25 years as Petoskey’s manager before he stepped down in 2009. He served as interim city manager for the City of Cheboygan and oversaw its search for a permanent city manager in 2011. He could not be reached for comment.
Richard Sangster, mayor of Cheboygan, said their search went well and he wouldn’t hesitate to hire Korthauer and the Michigan Municipal League again.
“They brought a lot of really good candidates and it was tough dialing it down to 12 for interviews,” Sangster said.
