American Waste buys residential routes

TRAVERSE CITY — Local company American Waste & Recycling bought residential routes in the Grand Traverse region from Waste Management.

The purchase means the Kalkaska-based garbage collector and recycling center will serve an additional 5,000 homes in Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Kalkaska, Benzie and Antrim counties.

Eddie Ascione, who owns American Waste & Recycling with his brother Mike, said the acquisition will result in few changes for customers.

"Maybe a different colored truck and possibly a different pick-up day," Eddie Ascione said.

American Waste & Recycling served more than 10,000 residential and commercial customers before the purchase.
