Airliner makes emergency landing in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY — An airplane loaded with roughly 50 passengers and crew members made an emergency landing at Cherry Capital Airport after a smoke detector in the plane's lavatory went off.

The emergency landing occurred Thursday at about 9 a.m., about 15 minutes after the Delta flight left the Traverse City airport en route to Detroit, Cherry Capital Airport Director Kevin Klein said.

Traverse City firefighters and airport mechanics checked the aircraft but found no signs of smoke or mechanical problems. The plane returned to service about 90 minutes after the landing.

Federal Aviation Administration guidelines require pilots to ground planes if smoke detectors are triggered.

"It's just one of those things you do to adhere to safe practices," Klein said.
