Shelby Miles, Jacqueline Morrison, Jacob Loew and Alec Altonen were in the first class of preschool graduates after Carol Maten opened Wooden Pony Preschool in 1998.
The recent Elk Rapids High School graduates returned to thank Carol for starting them on the road to a good education. They presented her with a plaque and flowers in recognition of her years of service and dedication to the “love of learning” and her commitment to the community.
Susan Kuschell, the family of Linda Verellen and several members of The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City have shared their love of gardening and the “garden to table” growing practices with area children by leading the Children’s Garden Summer Growing Program for a number of years.
The children tend vegetable gardens at the Children’s Garden at the Traverse Area District Library, which includes responsibilities for planting, watering, weeding, harvesting and eating produce from their gardens. For the past several years, the children also have shared the bounty from their gardens by donating fresh vegetables to the local food bank.
This “Garden to Table” program recently received the first place “Share the Harvest” Community Vegetable/Edible Garden Award at a recent convention of Michigan Garden Clubs Inc.
Andrew and Amy Kohlman, owners of Signs Now Traverse City, recently donated more than $1,200 to TART Trails and The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay as part of their 2012 recycling program.
Signs Now, 741 Woodmere Ave., offers business solutions for outdoor and indoor signage, banners, window and vehicle graphics, exhibit and trade show graphics, ADA signage, dimensional letters, directional systems and other visual communications tools. The Signs Now team recycled returned signage materials throughout the year and donated a percentage of the original product sale to both organizations. The program is in its third year.
“We are extremely proud of the progress we have made in assisting local organizations to keep our area beautiful,” Andrew Kohlman said.
The Maritime Heritage Alliance recently completed its 27th annual boat auction, which was very successful and raised approximately $20,000 for the organization.
MHA acknowledged that a large part of that success was due to the amazing help of its volunteers; SparkleWash, which donated its services to clean up the donated boats so they would look “pretty” for the auction; and the services of auctioneer Ron Bancroft.
All 235 tickets for Advent Lutheran Church’s Sportsman Dinner were sold in three weeks. The dinner and raffle were held April 15 at Boone’s Long Lake Inn.
Proceeds of the successful fundraiser were shared by Benzie Area Christian Neighbors, Advent Lutheran Church’s Baby Pantry, Veterans Youth Center Safety Program and the new Advent Lutheran Church grounds improvements.
