NMEAC seeks nominees for environmentalism awards

TRAVERSE CITY — Members of the Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council seek nominations for their annual “Environmentalist of the Year” awards.

NMEAC officials each year hand out awards to environmentalists across 12 categories. They typically receive between 60 and 70 nominations per category each year, said M’Lynn Hartwell, who’s planning the event.

“It’s important for environmentalists to be recognized for their advocacy to know the work they’re doing is noticed,” Hartwell said. “It’s often thankless work when you’re a farmer or a businessman.”

Past winners include SEEDS, a nonprofit in Traverse City, and Lew Coulter at the Grand Traverse Conservation district.

Hartwell encouraged people to nominate environmentalists who are new to the field.

“We want to recognize people that are new or newly at the leading edge of their area of interest,” Hartwell said.

People can be nominated as environmentalist of the year in the following categories: agriculture, educator, business, education through music, general, journalism and communications, professional public service or public office, grass roots group, student, and volunteer.

Nominations are accepted online at nmeac.org.

Winners will be announced at dinner and event on April 26 in the Park Place dome. Tickets are available online or at the door for $20.
