National Anti-Bullying Month upcoming events

Upcoming local Anti-Bullying Month events


Anthony Ianni, the first Big Ten basketball player known to have Autism and member of the Autism Alliance of Michigan, will have a casual conversation geared toward college students.

The event will be today from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Fine Arts Building, room 115, at Northwestern Michigan College.

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights Anti-Bullying Task Force will host a discussion titled “No Place For Hate” tonight from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Horizon Books, lower level, 243 E. Front Street, in Traverse City.


Various community groups are pulling together to host an anti-bullying conference titled “Cyber-bullying and the impacts of social media.” The conference is the second of its kind and will feature Kevin Epling, a father from East Lansing whose son committed suicide after being bullied. Epling successfully passed a Michigan anti-bullying law, called “Matt’s Safe School Law” after his son.

He’s also the national co-director and Michigan representative for Bully Police USA. Ianni also will speak. The event is Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hagerty Center, 715 East Front Street, in Traverse City. Admission is free and lunch will be provided. Register online at

Ianni also will speak to West Middle School students, parents and staff to raise bullying awareness. He’ll speak at the school at noon Friday at the school, 3950 Silver Lake Road in Traverse City.

Interlochen Community School will host an assembly to mark the implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program on Oct. 29 at 9 a.m. The assembly will be at the school, 3113 M-137, in Interlochen.
