Bijou by the Bay opens tonight

TRAVERSE CITY — Three months after its doors first opened during the Traverse City Film Festival, the Bijou by the Bay theater opens tonight for its first public movie screenings.

Michael Moore, founder and president of the Traverse City Film Festival, announced late Friday that the theater would open with four showings of the classic film "Gone with the Wind."

The screenings — at 6:45 p.m. today, 2 and 6:45 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday — begin a series of five weekends leading to a community celebration scheduled for Nov. 21.

The theater, housed in the historic Con Foster building adjacent to Clinch Park, underwent about $1 million in renovations in preparation for the opening, according to Moore.

It features state-of-the-art projector and sound systems in addition to major renovations made to the building.

Organizers have spent the past three months finishing construction that was in progress at the facility when it first opened its doors during the Film Festival. There have been some private showings and a few test screenings since July, but tonight marks the first public event for the theater.

Tickets cost $5 for the weekend shows. For more information about the opening and for the rest of the fall schedule, go to www.statetheatretc.org/bijou-classic-gems.
