Man charged for 'bath salts'

TRAVERSE CITY — A Mesick man faces felony drug charges after so-called “bath salts” were found in a backpack and cooler he threw out of his vehicle before a traffic stop, authorities said.

A state police trooper clocked Jeremy Richard Clous, 22, traveling 86 mph in a 55 mph zone on M-113 in Mayfield Township on July 11. The trooper reported seeing Clous throwing items from his front to rear seats before he pulled over the vehicle.

“(The) trooper smelled marijuana after contacting the defendant and observed a marijuana pipe inside the vehicle,” court documents state. “A search of the vehicle was conducted and various (drug-related) objects were found and destroyed at the scene.”

Clous was arrested on a felony warrant out of Cadillac for possession of bath salts, a broad class of synthetic drugs that once flew under the radar of state and national drug laws. Convenience stores often sold the drugs over-the-counter as “bath salts.”

The police report states one day after the traffic stop a resident who lived nearby found a backpack and a cooler containing suspected bath salts. Clous later admitted the items belonged to him and he threw them out of his vehicle while turning onto Rahe Road, according to the report.

“Clous admitted to having an addiction and needing help,” the report states.

State police lab tests found the suspected bath salts were alpha-pyrrolidinovalerophenone and buprenorphine. The Grand Traverse County prosecutor’s office authorized a warrant for two felony counts of possession of narcotic analogues on Wednesday after the test results.

“They’re generally considered to be in that class of substances (called) bath salts,” said Prosecutor Bob Cooney.

Clous could face a 4-year prison sentence based on a second-offense charge.
