Man pleads guilty to trailer park stabbing

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse City man involved in a stabbing at a Long Lake Township mobile home park entered a guilty plea that saves him from a potential life sentence.

Clifton Lamar Humphrey, 36, stood trial in 13th Circuit Court on felony charges that included assault to commit murder. Authorities said he stabbed a 21-year-old man during a June 22 altercation in Suburban Estates mobile home park.

Humphrey pleaded guilty on Tuesday to assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder and a third-offense habitual offender charge. Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said the plea agreement came after three days of testimony.

The prosecution called the victim and six other witnesses to the crime. Cooney said the prosecution argued Humphrey’s motive was that he was not invited to a gathering in the 7100 block of Cherry Lane Drive following a “falling out” that occurred on Memorial Day three weeks earlier.

“There was a falling out between him and the neighbors across the street,” Cooney said.

The victim suffered stab wounds to his leg and abdomen. Humphrey drove away but was arrested four hours later by Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies and charged with five felonies. A conviction could have carried a life sentence, but charges in the plea deal carry a maximum 20-year sentence.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25.
