Elk Rapids police probe robbery attempt

ELK RAPIDS — A masked man entered an Elk Rapids pharmacy and demanded drugs, but employees shooed him from the store, authorities said.

Village police are investigating the Monday incident and had no suspects by Tuesday afternoon.

Elk Rapids Police Chief Tom Emerson said in-store camera footage from the Corner Druggist on River Street shows a stocky male suspect who wore a face mask entered the store through a back entrance about 4:15 p.m. He lingered for a few minutes and then made his way behind the pharmacists’ counter.

“(He) confronted the pharmacist and demanded drugs,” Emerson said. “The pharmacist refused and the subject became agitated. He demanded drugs several more times and the pharmacist still refused.”

The suspect eventually ran from the store when a pharmacy assistant dialed 911.

Corner Druggist employees declined to comment.

Emerson said the suspect ran to the southwest and village police requested the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department have a police dog track the suspect. Sheriff’s Capt. Randy Fewless said the dog lost the trail at a nearby parking lot, where authorities believe the suspect left in a vehicle.

The suspect is described as a stocky man between 5 feet and 5 feet 5 inches tall and wearing a hooded dark jacket or sweatshirt and a face mask. Members of the public with information are asked to call the Elk Rapids Police Department at 231-264-6592.

Emerson said Elk Rapids hasn’t seen a similar robbery attempt “in recent memory.”
