Winter's last stand coming

TRAVERSE CITY — Nancy Lawrence is resigned to the fact that northern Michigan weather can be unpredictable.

Still, she acknowledged she would have preferred earlier spring weather as she walked through cold, misting rain Monday in downtown Traverse City.

“I was expecting warm weather when April started,” she said. “That’s what you get up here. You never know.”

Lawrence may have to wait longer. Meteorologists are tracking a weather system that could bring a wintry mix starting late Wednesday and continuing through Friday.

Mike Boguth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord, said temperatures on Monday were “not too shabby” despite the rain.

“Then we go downhill from that point on,” he said. “There’s a potential for a decent winter storm through northern Michigan. Traverse City is not out of the woods yet.”

Boguth estimated 40 to 50 percent chances for prolonged freezing rain, sleet and potential snow accumulation, but said as of Monday that determining the exact distribution was highly uncertain.

“This is a really dicey situation,” he said.

The National Weather Service had not issued a weather warning for the area by the Record-Eagle’s deadline Monday.

Boguth said weekend weather should be better, if unseasonably cool with highs in the 30s and 40s, regardless of the outcome of potential winter weather.

“Most of the precipitation should be out of here,” he said.
