3 arrested for smuggling drugs into prison

KINGSLEY — Police arrested three people they believe smuggled contraband into Pugsley Correctional Facility.

Prison staff began to closely monitor inmates after they discovered substantial amounts of marijuana at the Kingsley facility, according to a news release. The Traverse Narcotics Team set up surveillance in and around the prison.

Undercover officers on Tuesday arrested a Petoskey man, 24, “in the act of concealing marijuana on the grounds,” a news release states.

Detectives located a vehicle occupied by two females who matched information provided by prison staff. A search revealed additional marijuana and tobacco, police said.

Kevin Smiley, a media liaison for Pugsley Correctional Facility, could not say when staff first became aware of the alleged contraband smuggling. TNT was involved in the investigation for about a month.

“As a regular rule, we look for contraband every day,” Smiley said. “We’re always monitoring.”

Smiley said this was the prison’s first collaborative effort with TNT. He could not comment on the amount of drugs smuggled into the prison.

Detectives continue to investigate the involvement of inmates or co-conspirators.

The suspects are lodged in Grand Traverse County Jail and face multiple felony charges. Their names are withheld pending arraignment.
