Shooting victim identified

TRAVERSE CITY — Roger Rex Howard, 29, was shot in the upper chest Friday night, according to a press release from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department.

He was given medical attention at the scene before he went to Munson Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Howard was visiting Nicole Rachell Mitchell, 27, of Traverse City, at her Long Lake Township home. The two were acquainted, according to the release.

Mitchell told investigators she told Howard he wasn’t welcome in her home. He entered, and she picked up a semi-automatic pistol to defend herself and her children, according to the release. She reported that Howard grabbed the pistol and it discharged.

Mitchell saw Howard walk into the hallway and then collapse, according to the press release.

Earlier that evening Mitchell picked Howard up from his Garfield Township apartment and took him home, where the two got into a fight, according to the release. Mitchell told investigators she asked Howard to leave, but when she went upstairs to check on her children she heard him come in anyway.

She was at her rental condominium with three children, two of which were her own, according to the release.

No arrest has been made and it's undetermined whether charges will be sought.
