Woman had near-fatal blood-alcohol content

HONOR — An Honor woman had a near-fatal blood-alcohol level when sheriff’s deputies found her inside a home, said Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel.

Deputies on Sunday found an unconscious woman inside an Honor home and originally believed she had overdosed on an opiate mix. Schendel said deputies used a nasal spray dose of Narcan to revive her but later found she had a blood-alcohol content of .39, close to a fatal level.

“We’re still kind of looking into it,” Schendel said. “She is fine; there’s no charges pending.”

Deputies recently started to carry Narcan — a drug that can reverse opiate overdoses — in an effort to cut down on Benzie County’s spate of fatal drug overdoses.

Schendel originally believed the incident counted as the first time deputies successfully used the drug. He said it wouldn’t have any positive or negative effect on blood-alcohol poisoning.

Ambulance personnel transported the woman to Munson Medical Center.
