Heroin floods court docket

TRAVERSE CITY — Another day, another heroin case.

Illegal drugs inundated Grand Traverse County’s court docket last week. The flood included three suspects who were arrested in a hotel room drug bust and an Indiana man charged with possession after suspects slashed and stabbed him on a college campus.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said the cases, and others pending, show local enforcement’s increased focus on drug-related activity, as well as the apparent availability of heroin and related drugs.

“I would say there’s been more of an effort lately, especially with the increase we’ve seen in heroin,” he said.

Traverse Narcotics Team Detective Lt. Daniel King said drug task force commanders across northern Michigan noted a recent spike in heroin cases. He said downstate drug dealers can double their profits from willing customers in and around Traverse City or Cadillac.

“Usually, the people who use heroin are opiate addicts and can’t get enough oxycodone or morphine, so they’ll seek heroin,” King said.

Heroin is just one drug Traverse Narcotics Team officers found in a Pinestead Reef Resort room, according to court documents. Three suspects arrested in the Feb. 26 raid appeared for arraignment last week in 86th District Court — Jade Brittany Jenkins, 24, of Interlochen, Lebronze Pierre Seamon, 31, of Detroit, and Kelleen Marie Tolle, 50, of Traverse City.

Court documents state officers found 6 grams of heroin and 38.3 grams of crack cocaine inside a safe, 8 grams of suspected methamphetamine on Seamon and $5,000 in cash and packaging material throughout the room. A sheriff’s deputy seized suspected crack cocaine from Tolle during a traffic stop after detectives watched Seamon approach her parked vehicle.

Jenkins and Seamon face felony drug charges related to delivery or manufacture of cocaine and heroin. Tolle is charged with possession of cocaine under 25 grams.
