Teen arrested twice in nine days

TRAVERSE CITY — A Florida teen who police nabbed with a load of stolen items was right back at it after authorities let him loose on bond, police said.

Traverse City Police arrested Patrick Michael Bedrick, 18, late Sunday after someone saw him inside a parked vehicle in an alley near Second Street. He was out on bond after a Nov. 17 arrest for similar activity.

“It’s definitely frustrating,” City Police Capt. Brian Heffner said. “This individual has a pending criminal case and he’s back committing the same act.”

Bedrick doesn’t keep the best company, either. He was arrested with Matthew Tyler Brown, who was out on bond awaiting sentencing on a misdemeanor count of breaking and entering a vehicle to steal property.

Brown also was with Bedrick on Nov. 17, when city police pulled Bedrick over and found both marijuana and items believed to have been stolen from several vehicles during a search of his vehicle.

The items included laptop computers, digital cameras, seven GPS units and two paintball guns.

Authorities said they didn’t have enough evidence to arrest Brown on Nov. 17, but they did so on Monday.

A magistrate gave Bedrick a personal recognizance bond — which doesn’t require a defendant to post any money — on Nov. 18. He was due in court today to be arraigned on charges tied to the Nov. 17 incident. Brown is scheduled to be sentenced on his previous charge in December.

Both Bedrick and Brown remained in the Grand Traverse County Jail Monday.

Bedrick is from Florida. He came to the Traverse City area sometime within the past few years and largely has been homeless or couch-surfing, police said.

Court officials declined to comment on the pending cases.
