No one injured in fire on South West Bayshore Drive

TRAVERSE CITY — Firefighters spent about three hours fighting a blaze that erupted on South West Bayshore Drive.

The fire started late Wednesday in a garage and moved on to consume parts of an apartment above the garage. The apartment was connected to a house by a breezeway, Traverse City Fire Department Chief Jim Tuller said.

The house was not damaged and no one was injured, Tuller said. The family who lived in the house escaped by the time firefighters arrived around midnight, and no one lived in the apartment.

“It was fortunate that there was nobody living in the apartment at the time of the fire,” Tuller said.

The Traverse City Fire Department called for backup from other local departments

“Operations during the cold weather are more difficult so we rotate personnel more frequently,” Tuller said.

An investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing, but it’s suspected to be an electrical accident, Tuller said.
