---- — LANSING — Registered sex offenders across Michigan are walking into police and sheriff’s departments in order to verify their addresses.

State law requires registered sex offenders to contact their local law enforcement agency or state police post within a 15-day period starting Jan. 1. Offenders who are not in compliance face arrest and up to two years in jail or prison.

Tier 1 sex offenders are only required to verify their address once a year while Tiers 2 and 3 need to do so semi-annually or quarterly, respectively. All are required to report change of name, address, employment, enrollment, Internet identifiers and vehicles within three business days.

About 250 registered sex offenders currently live within Grand Traverse County, according to the state registry.
