TRAVERSE CITY — A Williamsburg man who tried to help a driver who veered off the road was seriously injured in a four-vehicle crash near Fife Lake.
The Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Department was forced to close lanes on U.S. 131 for more than three hours, said Capt. Randy Fewless.
A Williamsburg man, 56, pulled off the road near Elliott Road in Fife Lake to check on a Grand Rapids driver who lost control of her vehicle and went into a snowbank.
Another driver, from Riverside, Ill., lost control of her vehicle and struck the Williamsburg man’s vehicle, which pinned him between the two stopped cars .
The Illinois woman then veered to the other side of the road and hit a fourth vehicle.
The Williamsburg man and a passenger in the Illinois woman’s car were transported to Munson Medical Center with serious injuries, Fewless said.
“People need to be aware whenever they do stop and help someone when the road conditions are bad, to be aware of their surroundings and make sure they are well off the roadway or call us,” Fewless said. “We can come down and at least make the situation safe.”
