Arts groups receive $432,260 in grants

TRAVERSE CITY — Arts and cultural organizations in the five-county Grand Traverse region received $432,260 of a total $7.7 million in 2014 state grants.

Grand Traverse County led the region with 18 grants to local arts groups totaling $306,760. Other totals for area counties were: Benzie, $106,000, and Leland $19,500.

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs did not provide details on how the grants will be used but said they include awards for artist-in-education programs, capital improvements and project operations.

The largest area grant, $75,000, went to the Michigan Legacy Art Park, which also received a $17,500 award. The Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts in Frankfort also received $14,000.

The Traverse City Film Festival received $60,000, the largest amount in Grand Traverse County.

Other Grand Traverse County grants included: Artcenter Traverse City, $6,090; City Opera House (2 grants), $14,000 and $33,000; Great Lakes Children's Museum, $17,000; History Center of Traverse City, $17,000; Interlochen Center for the Arts (2 grants), $47,500 and $8,550; Northwestern Michigan College’s Dennos Museum, $18,000; Old Town Playhouse, $12,000; Parallel 45 Inc. (2), $10,500 and $4,000; Rotary Charities (2), $30,200 and $11,720; and Traverse Symphony Orchestra, $17,000.

The Leelanau Community Cultural Center received $12,000, while The Leland Public School District picked up $7,500.

The state's 2014 arts and cultural grants budget is about $2 million more than last year. Grants in 2013 totaled $5.7 million. The 384 grants in 2014 to 52 counties will amount to $7.7 million, said John Bracey, executive director of the Michigan arts council. The council received 475 requests, he said.
