TRAVERSE CITY — An Alba man stood before a judge for the first of two separate sentencing hearings in a case involving sexual contact with a 11-year-old girl.
Thirteenth Circuit Court Judge Philip Rodgers on Friday sentenced Scott Wayne Buning, 20, to 15 to 45 years in prison on a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. Buning pleaded guilty in November to sex crimes charges from both Antrim and Kalkaska counties.
Antrim County Prosecutor Jim Rossiter said the minimum sentence is at the “high end” of the sentencing guidelines.
“It’s more of public safety issue with (Buning),” Rossiter said. “The judge pointed out the concern is the protection of the public.”
Buning on Monday is scheduled for another sentencing hearing in Kalkaska’s 46th Circuit Court on five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Authorities said Buning, a friend of the victim’s family, had sexual intercourse with her in October and December 2012 in Kalkaska County’s Rapid River Township and Mancelona, respectively. He pleaded guilty in April to attempting to harbor runaways, a related case involving the same girl.
