NWS issues winter storm warning

EDITOR'S NOTE: The National Weather Service Gaylord office has issued a winter storm warning in effect until Thursday at 4 p.m. for most of the five-county Grand Traverse area.

TRAVERSE CITY — There are only three more days until March arrives, but Traverse City won't soon see any signs of spring.

Thursday's low temperature is predicted to hover around zero degrees, said Andy Sullivan, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord. He doesn't expect it to warm any from there.

Traverse City temperatures could challenge the record books Thursday night and Friday morning, Sullivan said. Lows are predicted to drop to at least minus 10 degrees, and it could get even colder.

The record low for Feb. 27 is minus 16 degrees, which was logged in 1994. The record low for Feb. 28 is from 1962, when it was minus 22.

"It's possible Traverse City could break records, but we're not forecasting it right now. It's going to be obviously bitterly cold, but the real thing to watch is the windchill," Sullivan said.

The National Weather Service predicts Thursday's wind chills will approach minus 20 degrees.

"It's a combination of low temperatures and winds," Sullivan said. "The winds should tail off overnight."

Matt Church, 26, of Traverse City, called forecasts for near record-setting low temperatures, “pretty crazy” and said he’s ready for spring to arrive.

“I’m definitely ready for better weather and some sun,” Church said. “I think everybody is getting pretty bummed and depressed because it’s been so gloomy.”

This month's temperatures have been far below normal, Sullivan said. Last Feb. 27, the National Weather Service recorded a high temperature of 37 degrees with a low of 27.
