TRAVERSE CITY — A Suttons Bay man faces multiple felony charges after authorities said he led them a chase through a Garfield Township trailer community in a stolen pickup truck.
Samuel Sanchez Jr., 26, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 18 at 11 a.m. in 86th District Court.
Authorities believe he is the suspect who walked unannounced into a Kings Court trailer on June 23 and was chased out by a man and woman. Court documents the suspect was then seen by a group of neighbors gathered in the trailer park after the incident.
“At this point the man took of the white T-shirt he had been wearing and took a fighting stance as if to fight the group,” the documents state. “The man then took off a second time, now wearing only a dark-colored pair of shorts.”
Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 2:14 a.m. on the potential home invasion and quickly set up a perimeter to have a K-9 officer track the shirtless suspect.
A pursuit began when deputies observed a pickup truck speed recklessly through the trailer park. It never left the park and ended when the suspect crashed the vehicle into a tree. Court documents state Sanchez ran and resisted arrest after running up to a porch and attempting to gain entry into a trailer.
Investigators believe Sanchez entered the car of the man and woman who called authorities, and potentially other vehicles, as well. The pickup truck he drove was reported stolen from elsewhere in the trailer park.
Sanchez faces five felony charges of first-degree home invasion, attempted home invasion second degree, unlawful driving away in a pickup truck belonging to another person, fleeing a police officer and resisting arrest, as well as misdemeanor charges of operating while intoxicated and operating on a suspended license. He faces life imprisonment with a fourth offense habitual offender enhancement.
Sanchez is being lodged in Grand Traverse County jail with no bond because of a parole violation.
